Caracol
Caracol means snail in Spanish, that name was given to the site by the first archeologists to become aware of the site. It is thought that the Mayan name for the site may have been Oxhuitza. Caracol has been partially excavated and restored by archeologists, allowing us to see it as it was. In the unexcavated portions, unless you know what you are looking for you might walk right over a ruin and never even notice it. Caracol is one of the largest Mayan sites in Central America and depending on how you measure it, height or area, the largest or second largest known site in Belize.<
